What calibration actually does (and doesn't)
Calibration maps the physical extremes and centre of your analog sticks so the controller and games interpret their raw signal correctly. When you calibrate, you typically rotate the stick fully and let it rest, and the system records those boundaries. This can correct a stick that reads slightly off-centre, doesn't quite reach full input, or has an uneven range.
What calibration cannot do is repair physical wear. If the resistive track inside a potentiometer stick is worn, calibration can compensate for the resting offset briefly, but the wear keeps progressing and the drift returns. Be clear-eyed about that going in.
Think of calibration as adjusting where the goalposts are, not repairing the pitch. It corrects how the signal is interpreted; it doesn't fix a sensor that's physically degrading.
Before you calibrate: test first
Always take a baseline reading before you change anything, so you can tell whether calibration actually helped. Open the Joystick Test, rest the stick, and note the resting value. Calibrate, then test again and compare. This before-and-after habit turns "I think it feels better" into a real answer.
Screenshot or jot down your resting values before and after. A genuine improvement shows up as numbers moving toward 0.00; if the numbers don't change, calibration didn't address your problem.
Calibrating on Windows / Steam
Windows built-in tool: open the old joystick control panel by searching "Set up USB game controllers," select your controller, choose Properties, and use the Settings tab to calibrate. It's dated but functional for basic centering and range.
Steam Input: Steam offers per-controller calibration and testing under Settings → Controller. This is the most flexible route on PC, and it also lets you set dead zones (see what is a controller dead zone) alongside calibration.
Calibrating on PlayStation
PlayStation consoles don't expose a full manual stick-calibration menu the way PC does. On PS5, your practical options are to reset the controller (there's a small reset button on the back of the DualSense, pressed with a pin), which clears its pairing and internal state, and to keep firmware up to date. If a stick still rests off-centre after a reset, the issue is likely hardware rather than calibration.
Don't rely on a “PS5 calibration” website that asks you to connect your controller and follow on-screen circles — those pages can't write calibration data to the controller. Genuine DualSense calibration is limited to the controller reset and firmware; anything promising more is overstating what's possible.
Calibrating on Xbox
Standard Xbox controllers don't have a manual stick-calibration menu, but the Xbox Accessories app (on Xbox and Windows) lets you update firmware and, on Elite controllers, adjust stick response curves — which achieves much of what calibration would. Keeping controller firmware current through this app is worth doing before concluding a stick is faulty.
Calibrating on Switch
Nintendo Switch has a built-in option under System Settings → Controllers and Sensors: "Calibrate Control Sticks." Follow the on-screen prompts to reset and recalibrate. Switch sticks are especially drift-prone, so calibration here is often a short-lived reprieve rather than a lasting fix — useful to try, but don't be surprised if drift returns.
When calibration won't help
If you calibrate, test, and the drift is unchanged — or it returns within hours or days — you're dealing with physical wear that software can't touch. At that point calibration has done its job of ruling out a signal-interpretation problem, and the next steps are hardware: cleaning the stick, or replacing the module (ideally with Hall-effect). Recalibrating over and over hoping it will eventually “take” on a worn stick. Once calibration hasn't held, repeating it won't change the outcome — the sensor is the problem, not the calibration.
Expected Result
After calibrating and re-testing, you should see:
- Your stick's resting value sitting closer to centre than before
- Cleaner centering when you release the stick
- Full range restored in every direction
- Menus and camera no longer creeping (if the issue was minor)
